Excitement has built as I write “Dawn’s Light.” The suspense is building and oh no! Another wedding! “Lord? If it is okay with you, let’s have a fun outdoor wedding. Pleeeeeease, please, please, please. He agreed, and I laughed as I typed and thoroughly enjoyed planning the outdoor wedding. My character, “Missy” was the most fun. But what five year old isn’t? 🙂
The book was going great and when it came time for the manuscript to be submitted I chose Tate Publishing that I used for “Pursuit.” I noticed small things at first that seemed to be different from when I used them previously. The above and beyond help wasn’t there. Employees were being “transferred” as frequently as changing our underwear. What’s going on?
When I would speak to my representative I would get the run around and excuses for this or that having not been done. “We’re in transition.” According to my contract I was once again going to have my book on T.V. after it was released. When questioned as to why it wasn’t I was given, “slight difficulties we’re working on.” In the end, I had a very legitimate lawsuit for breach of contract. They never had any intentions of fulfilling that part of the contract! There were no book signing events scheduled as per contract and many other contractual issues were not happening as before.
Just before “Dawn’s Light” was to be released I was asked if I would like to have “Seek My Face” reprinted by them since it was under no contract. After discussing it, I agreed and sent them the manuscript.
It disappeared! Yes, they received it!
No amount of questioning, e-mails, phone calls, or letters to the top executives did a bit of good! It was as though I never submitted anything! If anyone happens to have read, “Seek My Face” and finds another book under another title with my “stuff” please feel free to let me know. I think it’s called plagiarism and theft by taking!
Then the real bomb came crashing down and exploded right in my face!
UPDATE 5/4/17: Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter filed eight felony charges and one misdemeanor charge against Ryan and Richard Tate for alleged fraudulent business practices. Charges include four felony counts of embezzlement, one felony count of attempted extortion by threat, two felony counts of extortion by threat, one felony count of racketeering and one misdemeanor count of embezzlement.
Tate Publishing Company has gone out of business leaving me with two more books that I will get absolutely nothing in royalties for and a book that possibly could have been stolen for their own profits.
This sort of thing can happen to any of us when we entrust our hard work into the hands of others. It is out of our control but don’t let this stop you from fulfilling your dream. They aren’t all crooks!
Let’s move on – See ya’ next time.
